A NEW DIRECTION Cake: Calling All Super-Fans!

When one of our B&B team-members moved away from Toronto last month, we had to say goodbye to Rebecca in style. We knew exactly what be would be the perfect farewell: this fan girl was getting the full One Direction treatment!  We had the best time ever constructing perfect cake replicas of the guys who sing the Best Song Ever: Harry, Liam, Zayn, Niall and Louis.

We know this is a serious subject for the millions of 1D fans worldwide so we took our work VERY seriously. We started with research, reading up on the guys and printing photos of them for reference (too bad their new movie isn’t out yet!). From there, we built our edible fivesome and styled them appropriately. Cake baking and icing came next followed by the best part: Rebecca’s surprise! There might just have been a pair of tickets to their Toronto concert that came with the cake, as our thanks for all of her hard work. We’ll miss you Rebecca! Hope you enjoyed the time you got to hold One Direction in the palm of your hands.

This was one of our most fun projects! Not just because we obviously needed a little inspiration music in the kitchen as we worked….

Our TODAY’S BRIDE Photo-Shoot

We recently had the pleasure of taking part in a photo shoot for Today’s Bride! The Shangri-La hotel, vintage china and five tiers of hand-painted splendour in cake; what more could a bride want? And not just the bride, you’ll get no complaints from us spending our day like this! Our friend  Krista Foxwas the photographer, she’s incredibly talented and we always love working with her   The gorgeous stationary was created by Palettera and the florals were by the exquisite Stemz. Here are some of the images that made it into the magazine.

Our Architectural Comission: A Tower Cake

When First Canadian Place called us to make a cake replica of their Toronto tower, we jumped on the opportunity to take our cake building to new heights (har har)! By the time we were through, we all felt as though we’d earned an honorary architecture degree. For now we’re going to stick with flour, butter and sugar (instead of steel and brick) but here’s how we made it happen.

The building is Canada’s tallest office complex which means that the tower cake was definitely the tallest cake we’ve ever made, standing almost five feet tall! Just to compare, that’s the size of your average ten year old boy.  The height required a LOT of forward thinking to allow for the weight of the tower without a toppling over situation (which would’ve definitely been a party foul). At it’s location in Toronto’s Financial District, the building has 72 stories. That’s a lot of sugar!

We received the architectural drawings in order to make a perfect scale version. If you’ve ever seen blueprints, you’ll know how complex they are. Luckily Daniella, a member of the B&B team, has an advanced degree in math and she helped us decipher the complex codes and drawings, perfectly scaling the huge tower into a smaller version. We also received samples of the exact marble of the floor and glass of the windows so we could replicate them perfectly in cake and sugar pastillage. It was a bit of a challenge to achieve a marble effect in sugar but we love trying new techniques and were really pleased with the result!

Here are some photos from sketches to slices! Just call us Bob(bette) the Builder.
